“A Day Late And A Dollar Short”

Tell me if you’ve heard this before: The Mavericks just missed out on signing another big time free agent. Just yesterday, The Dallas Mavericks lost out on a chance to get injury proned but talented center, Andrew Bynum. A lot of MFFLs were mixed on the option to bring Bynum to Dallas. But me being an MFFL, I felt it was a gamble worth taking. If healthy, I feel Bynum is the second best center in the league and at times can display dominance. Now, let me get to my main premise of this blog post: Why have the Mavericks always been “A Day Late and a Dollar Short” when it comes to signing free agents?

Here’s a list of players that have something in common when it comes to the Dallas Mavericks: Shaquille O’neal,Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Deron Williams and Andrew Bynum. If you haven’t figured out the direction I’m going with this, they’re all players the Mavs just seemed to miss out on signing whenever they were free agents. This is now becoming a reoccurring thing with the Mavericks. I cannot recall in Maverick history if they have ever picked up any “big time” free agent. We have always had a history of stealing our great players from the draft. Luckily, we were blessed enough to have Dirk fall into our hands as the 8th pick of the draft. If you didn’t know, Dirk wasn’t originally drafted by the Dallas Mavericks; he was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks. On that draft day, the Mavericks traded the hefty Robert “Tractor” Traylor to the Bucks for Dirk. I guess the Bucks weren’t sold on a skinny seven foot tall German kid with a chilli bowl haircut.

So What Now?– Unfortunately, it seems as if the Mavs are in a limbo that they can’t get out of. It’s been the same thing every year. You’ll hear about their interest in a player, and then later on, you’ll hear about that player signing with another team. I can’t seem to put my finger on why the Mavericks are always arriving late to the free agent party. The Mavs have become that guy in high school who could never get a date to the big dance. It can’t be the location; Dallas can be an attractive place to live because of it’s no state tax. When it comes to glamour, we’re not Los Angelos. But there are some things that are attractive about playing in the city of Dallas. We’re always stuck with getting the second tier free agents, but it still doesn’t make sense to me why we can’t catch the big fish in the pond. Things are going to have to change fast because Dirk doesn’t have a lot of time left. If this keeps reoccurring, they’re going to have to change our name from “Mavericks” to “Mediocrity.” Stay tuned to see what else this free agency summer brings…
