I remember sitting in my marketing concepts class last semester, and the main premise of the speaker’s message was this: We are our own brand. I listened to this message, and it really stuck with me. The speaker preached to us that we really need to brand ourselves anyway possible because the job market has never been more competitive than it is now, and with that, personal branding has never been more vital. I instantly saw every person that was sitting in that classroom as a competitor to me because I will one day be competing with them for a job. The good thing about today’s time is that there has never been so many platforms to brand ourselves, and I feel that one of those platforms is social media. Believe it or not, what we put on our social media is part of our personal brand.
In the past, when I thought of the word brand, I would think of large companies such as Nike, McDonalds or Coca-Cola. Very successful companies that have a positive image towards a lot of people. But branding is not just for companies, it can be for ourselves too. Branding can be how someone looks at you or thinks about you. Think about it, some of us will only wear certain clothing apparel just because of the brand. For example, I know people who will only wear Jordan shoes just because of its brand. Jordan has a very positive image towards its customers, and that’s why they sell a lot of products. Well I think that branding ourselves through social media can almost be the same thing. If you post content on your social media that is questionable, then certain employers don’t want to have anything to do with you. If every time a person gets on your Facebook and all they see is drama ,drama, drama and some more drama, then what will make them think it will be any different once they get around you. As a student hoping to have a successful career, I want every person and employer to look at me in a positive way and our social media can be a good platform for that.
You’re probably thinking how is it possible for us to brand ourselves through social media? Remember, we want people and our future employers to look at us in a positive way when they look at our social media because a lot of companies are doing social media background checks before they hire. There are a lot of ways on how we can utilize our social media by branding ourselves in a positive way, but here are several ways, in my opinion, that I think are good.
•Increase our social networks- The good thing about social media is that it can be beneficial when it comes to networking. Since there are platforms such as LinkedIn, we should utilize it and use it to its potential. Networking has never been more important in today’s market and social media gives us a chance to network with a lot of people in our circles.
•Post relevant content- You never know who may be looking at your social media. Posting relevant content that relates to a company will show them that you’re staying up to date with the latest news and you do care about being notice.
•Do extra such as starting a blog- I was told by a reporter last semester to start a blog. Your blog can be a perfect representation of who you are and what you’re about (your brand). It can make you stand out and also shows employers that you’re trying to improve your writing skills, which is almost essential in any industry.
Those are just several ways on how I think we can utilize social media to increase our personal brand. But overall, I feel that social media gives us a chance to display our uniqueness to other people in a good way. Everybody’s different, and I feel that’s the greatest thing we have to offer to any person or employer. If every brand were the same, then everybody would be wearing the same thing. But they’re not, some brands are better than others, and that’s why we chose to represent certain ones. Let’s do the same thing for ourselves, and now in this Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn driven world, social media is the perfect way to improve our personal brand.
